The decision to stop work

Long since I've been questioning me, but now it's time.

Yes, I decided to quit my office job to devote full time to my personal project.

My job was not so bad, good flex time available (although my time was full-time), I got along very well with my coworkers, had a nice office overlooking the sea and 30 meters I was running the office near my house (yes, until I walked three blocks imagine).

But the truth is that he was unhappy with what he did. Every day I came home from work I was doing my personal projects, and had some ances of ending the day to get to my desk and devote myself to finish what my. Apart from this, I have not seen a substantial pay increase, rather zero in recent years I have been. This may be secondary to many, but not for me.

Adding it all up, it appears that something did not fit well.

Moreover, my work income were X, and my income would become personal dedication 2 * X without much extra effort, but with the sacrifice of leaving a few hours to rest (yes, he slept little.) At this rate, to make ends meet get a X +2 * X = 3 * X.

Putting everything in balance, I decided to devote full-time to my projects, and while get more than 2 * X for my work, time enough for me.

My intention is certainly to have these 2 * X achieved over income alone. How? carrying out projects that are self-executing, and that give a return. At the rate he went, he could not do easily, but this new rhythm, I do hope so.

My new job

My new job is going to be at home. In my own desk and comfortable chair (carefully selected some time ago for this purpose). It is time to risk for that to happen, waiting for better returns. This means sacrificing some things, such as:

  • Sociability is achieved by working in an office with other people.
  • The schedule lunch with some coworkers.
  • The challenges that an office job can assert yourself.
  • The potential for growth or advancement.
  • The safety of my family in case something happened to me.
  • The paid leave (days off) and bonuses.

Sociability concerns me, but that try to coordinate to go to lunch with someone closer to home.

The midday meal is no big problem, I can arrange to go out to eat somewhere or make something at home (I doubt).

For the challenges that an office job can assert yourself, do not fear. I think the challenges I personally can impose are even greater.

On the growth potential is questionable. It all depends on how much to grow personally.

The safety of my family in case something happened to me, well, I too am concerned but not right now because I have no children (although I hope to have them) and live with my girlfriend with whom we share the same house (rented) . In case something happens to me, I tried to take my savings for banking at least once, and if something more serious happen to me, those savings would be for my family.

On holiday pay and Christmas bonus, I am now sure I must leave days, and this has to be present at the time of making numbers. My income, means that economically an improvement over my previous situation, they must also overcome the benefits received by way of salary, vacation and bonuses.

Positive factors

Moreover, these are positive factors that I see:

  • I myself ordered my schedule.
  • I work listening to music, looking out the window, watching the sea if you wish.
  • I go traveling and take my office under the arm, having internet access.
  • I throw the bone to the dog.
  • I organize my own projects.
  • ... And anything else that is forgotten.

What factors more for you to weigh in deciding whether to let your current job?

  1. Congratulations Jotaeme for this important step you've given!!
Here in Spain, to your new career call it "work as a freelancer. I did a few years working for my father, but as autonomous! And the truth is that it is hard and difficult, but when things start to roll (the early continuous sacrifices are made up), the rewards are immense. I just want to warn you of one thing: have enough reason to get time off to spend with your partner or your future family life because this work is not everything. Always be a source of money and personal satisfaction, but do not let them enslave you: WORK TO LIVE, NOT LIVE TO WORK!

A greeting, a big hug and best wishes for your new gait!

  2. Javi, excellent your comment. In addition, I thank you because you have been the first person to say something on this blog :)

I understand perfectly, and I agree that one must work to live, not live to work.

The truth about my decision that I hope to get better results coming achieved. It motivates me more the idea that I can on my own to get better returns to work to another without much progress (including promises of pay increases that never materialize, etc.).. Perhaps it has been my personal experience, but I feel more motivated at the moment, and even more free time.

Obviously these choices are in each person, and it takes a lot of self-control and self-dedication (of no use to the middle of the afternoon go to sleep a little nap because you work for yourself).
